You Aren’t Incapable, You’re Out of Capacity: Why a Website Template May Be the Right Fit for This Season of Life

I’ve been doing a lot of reflecting over the last year, more so than usual. If you read my latest blog, How To Run Your Business When it Feels Like the End of the World, you know that I am not someone who will stay silent in the face of adversity, change, or oppression. But through my reflections, I have started to see more clearly how the systems of patriarchy and capitalism have been weaponized against so many, especially women and mothers.

The constant and often invisible labor that we give to our families and our communities is seldom recognized or celebrated. Instead of acknowledging the unpaid labor that goes into our many roles, when it comes to balance, we are told to try harder. Ha… balance.

If you haven’t figured it out by now, balance is a lie that forces feminine-forward souls not into communities of supportive like-minded people, but into purchasing another planner, adding extra vitamins to the morning routine, and believing they are somehow broken if they can’t keep all the plates spinning. If you’re interested in learning more about that, I highly recommend checking your local bookstore or library for The Perfectionist’s Guide to Losing Control by Katherine Morgan Schafler.

But what does that have to do with running a business and building a website?

Everything.

Because you aren’t broken or “unbalanced.” And when it comes to putting yourself out there or starting a new brand, I know you aren’t incapable of doing it all yourself. Building a website has very little to do with how creative you are. It’s about how much capacity you have.

Define Your Season

Every week, new women slide into my Instagram DMs with beautiful, value-driven businesses. They are ready to grow and thrive but they don’t know where to start. Many people have been convinced they are somehow “cheating” if they start their business from a Squarespace template instead of building it from scratch or the alternative, paying thousands of dollars for someone else to build it for them.

When they ask for my advice, I don’t start by asking their budget. I ask them about their current season.

A season isn’t just winter, spring, summer, or fall 🎵(though each time of year does naturally affect our ability to motivate, move, and create). Seasons are periods in your life where your needs, desires, and values change based on what is going on within and around you. Even when our own desires and values don’t change, humans are tribal animals. Our ability to regulate and activate are greatly impacted and influenced by the world around us, from family life, community matters, political upheaval, and beyond. No matter how much hyper-individualism has been programmed into our way of life, we are not solo, isolated beings.

So my frequent questions of:

  • Do you have children?

  • Do you have a support team?

  • Do you enjoy the creative process?

Have also evolved into:

  • How is your household managing?

  • Is your support system grounded and stable?

  • Where is your mind wandering when it’s quiet?

  • How are you utilizing free time?

The question ultimately becomes: how much capacity do you and your support system have during this season of life and this era of history?

Since I know my Pinterest and Instagram followers aren’t the only ones wondering about how to move forward with their businesses, we decided to create this short twelve question quiz to help you better understand yourself, your needs, and the path forward to the best website option for you and your business.

Because you deserve to know what kind of website structure and support is best for where you are right now, without decision fatigue, pressure, or judgement.

QUIZ: Is a Website Template Right For This Season of Life & Business?
A quiz designed for women building businesses with limited time and full lives.

There is no right or wrong, just clarity. Let’s get started.

No matter your result, here’s what I want you to hear:

The modern industrial world wasn’t built with our nervous systems in mind. Just because you’re over-stretched, over-touched, and over-it doesn’t mean your business dreams are over. It’s just time to rethink and reimagine a new way to bring your vision to life.

You’re not behind.

You’re not doing it wrong.

And there is more than one way to build a website and your business.

No matter which way that happens to be right now, I’m glad you’re here. You’re exactly where you need to be.
